Expose Me

Let’s meet Homer Horowitz one of our monthly photo contest finalist. Self taught and motivated. He’s ready to capture some photo action! Here is his story… All eyes are on Homer!

I am a self-taught, greater N.Y. based, semi-professional photographer. My
relationship with photography started as a fling or love affair. Occasionally,
my camera and I would take long walks on the beach or watch a sunset. Now,
it’s blossomed into a full-blown romance. If you see me zoning out, or I appear
distracted, chances are I’m conjuring up a creative exposure technique or framing
out my perspective.

{ Why and when did you become a photographer?}
I began taking photos by default: growing up a part of the skate and snowboard
scene put me in the center of a bunch of really talented riders that love to run, play,
and jump off things. It just seemed natural to take pictures of what we were doing. I
always liked having my turns behind the lens as much as my turns in front of it. In
my mid-twenties, my photography really started to come into focus during my stint
as an outdoor educator. I was teaching photography to kids in the Bronx when “cha-
ching!” – it became clear.

{How would you describe your style photography?}
I love to experiment and try new things. I still go through a decent amount of film
and have a wall of old range-finders, manual focus lenses, homemade pin-holes,
SLRs, and box cameras. I do credit digital for many things – one of which being a
speedy learning curve. Three years ago I barely knew what “aperture” meant. Now
I’m reading my histogram to show details preserved in my shadows and highlights…
Crazy.

{What is my most difficult challenge in the business?}
Becoming a self-taught photographer has come more naturally then becoming
a self taught computer wiz and businessman. I’m very grateful for all my tec/biz
savy friends who walk me through creating my web presents, filing taxes and all the
other pitfalls I may come across.

{Where would you like to see your talents take you?}
“A master in the art of living draws no distinction between his work and his
play… he simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing, and
leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself he always
appears to be doing both.” – Francois Auguste Rene Chateaubriand
I’d like to create great images and a successful business around my fun-loving,
playful work ethic.
