Photographer Showcase – Heather McCutchen

Heather

We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Heather McCutchen owner of Wander & Scrawl Photography. Heather is a portrait photographer now living in Carrboro, North Carolina.

Tell us about you and your business?

I was born and raised in the beautiful, soaking wet Pacific Northwest. Recently I threw caution to the wind and moved across the country with my fiancé in search of sun and good manners. We landed in Carrboro, North Carolina, where we were fortunate to find both. My photography continues to evolve and change with me – a freedom I relish. Lately, I’ve been focusing on women and children’s portraiture.

How would you describe your style of Photography?

My tagline is ‘all natural, free range.’ I shoot outdoors with natural light as often as possible in places that reflect characteristics of the people I’m photographing. I sketch out a few ideas beforehand, but allow the shoot to unfold naturally. This results in images that are native and understated while hopefully dynamic. With women’s portraiture, my goal is to cultivate a positive self-image. Whether this comes from feeling liberated, desirable, or brave, my aim is to bring about a newfound sense of confidence.

How would you like your Photography to evolve in the next 5 years?

I would love to weave my intentions with women’s portraiture into a greater effort toward a healthy body image for women. Collaborating with others in a position to help women, from shelters to clinics to counselors’ offices is a dream I would love to realize. Continuing to find creative ways of giving back to my community through photography will always be a goal.

Which one of your photos do you consider to be your best?

This one (featured below) is one of my all time favorites, because it showcases what’s at the heart of my intentions with boudoir photography. She’s completely alive in this moment and undeniably confident in her own skin. Between the view, the daring model and the wind, it was definitely one of those moments you dream about as a photographer.

Where would be your perfect Holiday destination?

My perfect holiday destination is anywhere with a fireplace and endless rations of herbal tea and macaroons.

Why did you decide to become a Photographer?

A few years ago I met someone who encouraged me to have faith in my abilities. I bought a camera, took classes and paired up with industry veterans. I did a lot of work for free, which is my greatest advice for budding photographers looking to create a portfolio. When I don’t pick up my camera for long periods of time, a small gray cloud forms above my head like in the cartoons.

Which Camera do you use most?

I’m a Nikon fan. I don’t enjoy zoom lenses. I prefer to stay close to the people I’m photographing and tend to stick with the fixed length, buttery Nikkor lenses. That’s not to say you won’t catch me with a Holga every once in a while.

What is your favorite Movie?

It’s a tossup between Wall-E and Amélie. That may be because they rhyme .
